Causes of Democratic to Republican dominance between 1930's and 1980's?

From the 1930's to 70's the Democrats dominated politics - FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ but since the 70's the Republicans came to power with Nixon, Reagan and Bush. What are the primary reasons behind this?
