What can boxing learn from MMA - specifically, the UFC?
Boxing just needs a few new spark plugs. Right now the UFC is gaining more and more poularity, due to the marketing factor. You dont see boxing stars doing no other promos other promoting their match. Dana White is all over t.v. He took a page out of Vince Mcmon's (WWE) marketing and advertising book. In sports, your only as big as your biggest face...meaning, you wont be recognizable if the public doesnt recognize your biggest star. WWE will always be popular because they always keep recognizable stars like Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Triple H, you kno ppl like that. every few years the have a new big face. UFC does the same thing, with Shamrock, Couture, Liddell, Rampage, and more recently, Brock Lesnar. Boxing hasn't done this, they should, but they don't. Boxing allows itself to become stale at times. If it wasn't for Mayweather, Pacquio, De La Hoya, boxing really would'nt really be talked about these days. The top division in boxing, heavyweight, has nobody to wow the crowds no more. No big names, other than Klitchko. nobody seems to be "wowed" by him. He's good but boring. So if boxing has something to learn from UFC, it has got marketing. Oh, and cultivating stars that the public will love.
