In this age of "modern" technology, why are we still wary of the dark?

Night-vision equipment can break or the batteries can die. The Vietcong were experts at hiding in the shadows. Veterans can remember the feeling of knowing people would lurk in the shadows. They've ped it on to others. I write military fiction books and learned to use the dark to my advantage.
